as a fellow animal lover, I have fallen in love with Jane Boolittle.
she comes in the coffin window packaging, that has been given some unique details just for her, including stalactites and stalagmites around the top and bottom of the window. the back of the box features a full cartoon of Jane and her pet as well as a partial bio.
here we can see what all is included with Jane. she has a brush and stand, diary, her pet, purse, and her walking stick (which is a also a real marker).
Jane's fashion is rather interesting. she wears a pink/purple striped tunic with a blue netting skirt attached to the bottom of it. over this she wears an asymmetric tanktop with a blue and purple organic print. under all of this she wears a pair of kneelength black leggings with tattered hems.
below you can get a better look at the prints on her clothes as well as a view of some of her accessories. she has a black netting armwarmer on her left forearm as well as a red and a blue bangle. on her right wrist she has a thicker bracelet with tribal designs on it.
she also has a very tribal inspired belt. it is molded out of dark blue plastic like the bracelet, but has a few red painted on details. there are monster high skullettes, and feathers, and teeth or claws all over this belt. there are a lot of details here, and while artistically I want to paint them all and bring them out, the belt is kind of creepy to me.
now for two of Jane's stranger accessories. she wears a couple of red necklaces that are actually molded out of the same piece of plastic. over her right shoulder you can partially see one of the vertical bits that connects the two necklaces together. she also has on a pair of dark blue... pauldrons? that are actually one piece of plastic as well.
Jane also has a nice red headband with molded on feathers and a pair of mismatched earrings molded out of a light blue plastic. her left ear has a larger earring comprised of a bone with feathers hanging from it and her right ear has a smaller tooth or claw earring (Parental warning: earrings and bracelets are small parts!).
because Mattel must hate people with OCD, they also gave Jane a pair of mismatched shoes. they are both molded out of blue plastic. the left shoe looks like a snake is winding around her leg attaching itself by the tail to her sandal.
her right shoe looks kind of like a leg brace and goes all the way up to her knee and has feathers and other tribal inspired details. the brace-like appearance made people think she was going to be the first officially disabled character, but there is no mention of it in her bio, and in one of the webisodes she wears some ridiculous high heels, so I don't think that is the case.
Jane keeps a voodoo sloth she has named Needles for a pet. in spite of the creepy implications there, he's kind of a cute little character. he is molded in a softer blue plastic with his legs in position so that Jane can carry him on her back. the face paint is really nice and gives him a cute expression. he does have a slit in his back for use with the included paper slips.
I really like the sculpt of Jane's purse, but there are a few things about it that bother me. one being the obviously inexpert application of the red paint which really stands out on the dark blue plastic. I like that the handle looks like bones and it really reminds me of an oldtimey travelling bag. unfortunately before I even opened mine up (yes, it opens!) the hinges on the bottom were already showing signs of stress.
inside of the purse were these little slips of paper. they have a bit of a purple design printed in the corners. they are roughly the size of the paper slips that come out of fortune cookies.
Jane's walking stick is actually a marker for use with the paper slips (Parental warning: staining potential!). I believe the gimmick is that you write a secret on the paper, and then stick it in the slot in Neddles' back for safe keeping. there is a whole line of separate pets (which are out of scale to the dolls) for this purpose. honestly I think it's kind of silly.
the walking stick has a lot of nicely sculpted details. the top features the Monster High skullette, with a red hairbow that is molded in red plastic. under the skullette is a blue wrap with feathers that hang down the side. there are also some details that look like leather straps wrapping down the side of the walking stick.
rotated a bit you can see that there is a handle sculpted in for Jane to hold her walking stick. unfortunately, if she uses this handle, the walking stick will not actually reach the ground. to use it as intended, she would have to rest her palm on the top of the skullette.
The Bottom Line:
The Good: new character, lots of new and well sculpted accessories
The Bad: small parts, marker with all it's staining potential
The Verdict I really like Jane Boolittle with all of her interesting quirks. she is shipping in a case by herself, which should make her easier to find than new characters usually are. as of now this is the only version of the character, so if you like her I recommend picking her up.
