13 Wishes Howleen is a doll I go back and forth on. it wasn't until writing this review that I figured out what my issues with her were. I'll explain them as I go on.
she comes in the 13 Wishes packaging. the back of her box features cartoons of her and the other 3 dolls in the basic line. every time I look at the drawing I'm struck by how cute she is.
Howleen and her bright accessories kind of make my eyes bug out on that complicated background. in addition to the doll, she comes with a purse, a new version of her pet, a diary, and a black stand and brush. as far as I can tell, her stand is the same as the standard sized ghouls'.
outside of the package, Howleen's fashion isn't any less overwhelming. she has a black dress, with yellow lines and pink and blue pawprints. under this she wears pink mesh leggings (note: these do not have feet, and end about midway down her calf). she has a cropped purple jacket with silver ribbons sewn on to look like zippered pockets. I really love the jacket and I'm trying to find something else for her to wear it with.
to accessorize Howleen has a two toned belt, a black mesh glove, and two chunky bracelets (one each in black and purple). the glove was a big disappointment for me. it's just a small badly sewn tube that was rubberbanded onto her hand. unfortunately the rubberband was done in such a way that it actually warped the shape.
the above picture actually demonstrates the things that bother me the most about Howleen's fashion. firstly, the belt. in the cartoon of her the belt is blue and gold, but the physical item is teal, which appears no where else in the fashion. secondly, the trim at the bottom of her dress. in the cartoon it is yellow to match the line detailing, which I really like, but for whatever reason the physical dress has neon green trim, which also appears no where else in her fashion. these are poor color substitutions and the result makes me gag a little bit.
Howleen's final accessories are a black knit hat and a tiny "gold" stud earring (warning: all jewelry small parts). I actually don't mind her hair so much. I do like that they used a few different shades of pink and mixed them really well to make her hair appear more interesting. I don't know what kind of hair fiber was used, but her hair is starting to frizz, even with only minor handling, so be prepared for that.
and now for Howleen's best pair of shoes so far (and really one of the best pairs in general, but due to her size no one else can wear them). she wears black boots that almost reach her knees and have gold stud detailing at the top. these are very well designed and even feature molded in shoelaces and crossed bone detailing on the heels. you will definitely be seeing my Howleen in these boots in the future. they are made of a more rubbery plastic which makes them easier to remove, and I don't feel like I'm going to break her when doing so.
well, I actually kind of forgot about Howleen's purse. it is molded in gold plastic with a chain styled handle. the main body of the purse is nearly identical to big sister Clawdeen's original release. oh, wait, that teal in her belt reappears on this purse. I really don't like it here either.
finally we have another version of Howleen's pet hedgehog Cushion. apparently Cushion is a victim to Howleen's hair whims, as she is now pink to match her owner's hair. kids, please don't do this to your pets at home- they are living creatures, not accessories. other than that, she seems to be the same mold as Howleen's first release.
The Bottom Line:
The Good: new Howleen with her pet Cushion, some good mix/match clothing items
The Bad: small parts, hair
The Verdict: if you don't already have a Howleen, 13 Wishes Howleen is a good option, especially if you want her pet hedgehog Cushion.
