the first Monster High alumna to get her own doll is Nefera de Nile. she is the older sister of Cleo DeNile and is actually taller than the rest of the ghouls.
she comes in the coffin-style packaging, and her avatar is a cat mummy. the back of the box has a cartoon of Nefera and her bio. the bottom right corner has cartoons of the other two dolls in this wave and an advertisement for the Monster High video game.
removed from the outer box we get a better look at what all is included. in addition to her pet Azura, Nefera comes with her diary, a brush, and a stand. as far as I can tell, this is the same stand that comes with all of the other female dolls.
to be honest, I don't really understand Nefera's fashion. she has an asymmetric one-sleeved shirt that has a bandage and braid print in metallic blue, black, and orange. she has legwarmers in the same material with dangly bandage bits. her skirt has layers of this print and black strips that reminds me of cheerleader skirts. the sash is a turquoise see through fabric. it is attached to the skirt in the front and the back. the part that goes up to her shoulder has a little gold loop on it that is hooked around her necklace. I do not like that design.
her shoes are gold with orange, turquoise and black detailing. the heel is a turquoise cobra which helps to convey the Eqypt theme. the cobra is actually really detailed, with molded in scales, eyes, and open mouth.
like Cleo, Nefera has a lot of accessories. she has a really wide gold colored belt with a very detailed snake motif. she also has a wide cuff bracelet (small part!) that is gold with stud detailing around the middle. on her right middle finger she wears a ring (TINY part!!!) molded out of translucent blue plastic.
Nefera follows in the trend of mismatched earrings. her right ear has a golden pyramid earring, and her left ear has a snake (small parts!). she has an asymmetric necklace with a snake and orange "jewel" charms. she also wears some sort of weird gold basket on her head that I assume must be her crown.
in the pictures above you can also see her beauty mark and her hair. Nefera's beauty mark is an orange and white diamond just below her left eye. her hair is black with gold tinsel like Cleo's, but with the addition of turquoise. on the left side of her ponytail she also has a braid.
finally, Nefera carries a gold colored purse. the handle is a snake with heads at both ends. there are turquoise details painted on both sides. (yes, unfortunately the plastic is very swirly. Mattel seems to have trouble keeping the gold plastic from swirling.)
for companionship Nefera has her pet Scarab beetle. like Operetta's spider, the beetle is not to scale. it is gold with turquoise wings and face. it has molded in legs, antennae, and pincers. the eyes are painted in Egyptian style.
if you noticed I'm calling Azura the beetle an it, that's because Nefera refers to it as a he and a she in different parts of her diary, so I'm not sure what gender it is supposed to be.
The Bottom Line:
The Good: new character with unique body and accessories
The Bad: unique body, small (and TINY) parts
The Verdict: Nefera de Nile will stand out in your collection for many reasons, including her new body. it makes her taller than all of the other ghouls, which is neat, but this also keeps her from being able to share their fashions, so if you are a redresser you should take this into consideration. she really is a lovely doll.

up today we have Second Chance Spectra Vondergeist. I am calling her "second chance" spectra because I just bought her now that they've rereleased her. I only saw her once in the stores (last summer) and then never again. she was even a bit scarce online if I am remembering correctly.
so there she is in her coffin-style box. the back shows her cartoon and bio along with cartoons of the other dolls in this wave and an ad for the "Ghouls Rule" DVD.
removed from the box we can see what all miss Spectra comes with. her diary and pet, of course, but also a stand and brush. I am excited about the stand being molded in a signature plastic color. it seems like a lot of the more recent dolls come with cheap-feeling black stands.
Spectra's fashion does a pretty good job of showing the connection between ghosts and chains. her dress [one piece or 2?] looks very gothic to me, with the black "leather" psuedo corset. the skirt has floaty magenta and white fabric, with a black netting over skirt. this gives a good" fading effect. her "corset" has little chains attached across the front, and she wears a chain-like belt.
her jewelry incorporates more chains. she has ball-and-chain earrings and she has a shackle bracelet. she also has a very thin double stranded "chain" necklace.
Spectra has many features that make her unique from all the other ghouls so far. her arms and legs start in the white plastic of her body and fade out to clear for her hands and feet, to give her a more ghosty feel. (it bothers my ocd that they made the wrist peg out of white plastic instead of clear.)
her purple hair matches one her most unique feature... her eyes. instead of having the typical white background of the other dolls, hers is purple. this does give her a very haunting look.
Spectra's shoes bring in yet more chains. they are a semi-translucent magenta plastic, with silver chains painted on them. these chains wrap around her ankles several times and end in balls for her heels. I guess since she's already a ghost she doesn't have to worry about breaking her neck. sorry this photo is a little blurry, I'll update with a better one later.
finally we have Spectra's purse and her pet- her ghost ferret named Rhuen. he is made of a transparent plastic that fades from purple at his head, to clear at the end of his tail. something that really impressed me is that he is able to balance on his tail and stand alone.
her purse is molded out of a translucent purple plastic with a painted chain handle. the rounded shape makes me think of a pumpkin or a hobo bag, but it looks like it has molded on drawstrings like an old coinpurse.
The Bottom Line:
The Good: new character with lots of unique features
The Bad: some small parts, very difficult to find
The Verdict: Spectra Vondergeist has been a very popular character and thus hard to find. currently there is a Dot Dead Gorgeous Spectra out that I have seen in stores many times, so that might be a good alternative. I plan on picking her up when the budget allows.

I'm very excited to have just ordered Spectra Vondergeist! I only saw her once in stores, last year while I was on vacation so when she showed available on Amazon, I had to order her. FYI, if you go to her page for some reason she is showing up as being sold by a different seller, but if you click the "More buying options" link, you'll be able to order her direct from Amazon, with super saver or prime shipping. I don't know why sometimes Amazon isn't the default seller on its own site.
- Abbey Bominable: my review
- Nefera de Nile
- Operetta: my review
- Robecca Steam
- Rochelle Goyle
- Venus McFlytrap
I still need to order Nefera, Robecca, and Venus myself, but I've made a deal with myself that I will only order the new dolls once I have caught up on all the second-chance dolls I need. I might feel differently once October comes around, but for now I'm sticking to my guns.
I know I have been neglecting this blog something awful. I've been feeling really overwhelmed and right now my disaster-area of a craft room (where I keep my dolls) has not been a source of stress relief. hopefully I'll be able to finish getting it organized so I can craft (and play!) again soon.
I have not bought very many barbies this year. I think all I've bought is Dolls of the World Argenina, Brazil, India, and Ireland, and the Hunger Games Katniss doll. all of them are still in their boxes. other than the new Dolls of the World, barbie hasn't done a whole lot to pique my interest. and monster high has done too much, lol.
