much to the delight of fans, Mattel has produced Toralei's cohorts, the werecat twins. much to my dismay, they are a Toys'R'Us exclusive set. at long last we learn their names- Meowlody is the white-haired twin, and Purrsephone is the black-haired twin.
the back of the box features a cartoon of the sassy sidekicks, along with their joint bio. the way it is presented, with each sister answering the questions, it makes it feel like you are listening in on an interview, which I think is kind of cute. in the bottom right corner you can see the cartoons of the other dolls included in this wave, including Toralei herself.
inside the box we have the twins, and their diary. sorry I forgot to take a picture while they were still attached to the liner, I got a bit excited. these ghouls do not come with a brush or stands, and they have a shared diary. you can tell which twin wrote what by matching the handwriting and ink colors to the front cover.
starting from the top you will notice that they have identical face paint, but opposite hair colors. they both have a section of white hair with black stripes painted on. they both wear "leather" vests, Meowlody's is black with silver and red trim and Purrsephone's is red with silver and black trim. they both have black and white animal print sleeveless shirts, but Meowlody's is again black-dominant, and Purrsephone's is white-dominant.
they wear identical sets of "spike" bracelets on opposite arms (small parts warning!). and if you're OCD like me, you've probably already noticed that Meowlody is wearing a red glove with her orange miniskirt, and Purrsephone is wearing an orange glove with her red miniskirt. the skirts do have stitching to mimic pockets and a zipper-fly, which I think is a neat detail.
both twins have a yarn-ball shaped purse (cute detail!) that coordinates to their skirt color. you can see that their tails curl in opposite directions, and that they have stripes painted on opposite legs. I guess they are supposed to be mirror-twins? (ps: anyone know the scientific term for that? I couldn't find one.) also, their non-gloved hands are the standard claw hands.
both twins wear black open-toed knee-high boots with red soles. Meowlody's are pretty open in the front, with bows molded in across the fronts and on the sides. Purrsephone's are a more standard lace-up with "buckles" style. all in all you can tell that these twins like to dress alike.
added 10/19: here's a closeup of the bracelets they wear on their purse arms. when I was swapping their hands I noticed these bracelets look like studded cat collars, including a "bell". awesome detail Mattel!
The Bottom Line:
The Good: new characters, bright relatively character neutral colored clothes
The Bad: Toys'R'Us exclusive so likely hard to find, no stands
The Verdict: if you're a fan of the werecat twins, you'll want to pick this set up. currently it is the only way to get them, and I think it is unlikely that they will released again in the near future.
