finally made it down to the local TRU to exchange my Headmistress doll this weekend and found this lovely Avea Trotter mixed in. since their price was actually the same as amazon's I went ahead and picked her up. I've been waiting for a centaur to join Monster High for a while.
she comes in a new style of packaging specific to the Freaky Fusion line. instead of having the usual wedge shaped box, Avea is in an irregularly shaped box, that I have no idea how one would stack or pack. the back of the box features a partial bio and a computer image of Avea.
removing her from the outer box took a little work. she comes with a red diary and a yellow hairbrush. no stand, because she is supposed to be able to stand on her own.
I had a little trouble getting her to stand at first, but after a bit of manipulation of her front legs I was able to work it out.
Avea doesn't really wear a lot in the way of actual clothes. she has a blue sleeveless blouse with a ruffled collar, over which she wears a red satiny plaid shirt.
she has black gloved hands and wears a pair of chunky bracelets. her left wrist has a wide red bracelet, and her right wrist has a bracelet that looks like coils of rope, made of of purple plastic. she also has some sort of a belt/saddle thing that starts at her human waist and continues down her horse back.
on each of her legs Avea wears black shin guards. I'm no longer up on horse gear or terminology, but I don't remember the horses wearing anything like these. they do give a bit of interest to her legs though, so maybe it is just purely decorative.
because she is a cross between a harpy and a centaur, Avea actually comes with a pair of wings that plug into her back like the Create-a-Monster sets. the wings look really nice and are molded out of black plastic with some green paint that accentuates the feather details in the mold. I really like the way these look, but I plan on stealing them for my harpy CAM and making Avea be just pure centaur.
Avea has a pair of horse ears on the top of her head and wears a black top hat that kind of reminds me of a riding helmet. her eyeshadow is painted to resemble feathers around her eyes. it is nicely done, and I was happy that the only doll of her I've seen ended up having a decent application of it.
finally I will discuss what I believe My Little Pony collectors would call Avea's "cutie marks". on her back left leg and her front right leg Avea has Monster High skullettes painted on in a lavender color. they aren't terribly distracting, so I don't mind them.
oh, and she also has this weird black plastic piece around her tail that makes it stand up at the base. not sure if this is an actual horse related thing, or just another decorative thing. also, while it probably is removable, I don't know how it could ever be put back on again.
The Bottom Line:
The Good: new character, and it's a centaur!
The Bad: currently a little difficult to find
The Verdict: this will probably be the only version of Avea Trotter we see for a while, so if you are interested in her, I recommend picking her up. she's a lovely doll and has a lot of nice details.
