because Mattel totally needed more of my money, they created Ever After High. like Monster High, there is a website, webisodes, books, ...and dolls. my favorite character is Madeline Hatter, daughter of the Mad Hatter.
the packaging for these dolls is really cute. the boxes resemble books. I'll try to get some better pictures of the box later. the back has a cartoon of Maddie, and her bio, with 3 polaroid-style cartoons of the other 3 gals in the basic line.
with the front plastic casing removed we get a better look at Maddie and what all she is packaged with. she comes with a brush and a "bookmark". the bookmark is that blue rectangle on the top right that says "Rebel" on it. it's a strip of cardboard with a piece of paper glued to it that unfolds to reveal a little short story. it is akin to the diaries included with Monster High basic dolls.
here's Maddie freed from her box. her fashion is rather elaborate. the bodice of her dress is silver with purple cap sleeves. the skirt is 3 layers. the top layer is purple with gold printed filigree designs. the middle layer is blue and white striped. the bottom layer is black netting with gold glitter. she wears a bright blue ribbon sash.
underneath her dress, Maddie wears a pair of white with blue polka dot tights. her shoes are fabulous. they are pearly white with gold soles. the heal is curved and looks like a teapot handle. there is gold filigree painted across the toe. the entire effect makes her shoes look like fancy little teacups.
Maddie accessorizes with a purple headband with a tophat/teacup attached to the top of it. there is a teabag and more filigree painted on the side of the hat in gold. she also wears a blue necklace, and gold earrings that look like tiny teaspoons. so cute! (Parental Warning: small parts!)
Maddie also wears a pair of blue with white polka dot gloves (which are actually just her hands painted blue). the cuffs of the gloves are separate white pearlescent pieces that she wears like bracelets. on her right hand she wears a large purple ring. (Parental Warning: small parts!)
instead of a purse (or maybe as a purse?) Maddie carries a teapot. the main body of the teapot is gold with blue stripes painted on. the lid is a pearly white plastic. I haven't tried to open it yet. I'll let you know later on (and update with a not blurry pic, sorry!).
the included hairbrush is bright purple (it matches Maddie's hat) and key shaped. the head of the brush has the Ever After High logo on it. it is a face with hair covering one eye, and I think a hood. not really a fan. the handle/key part has the EAH school crest on it.
finally we have her stand. it is the same purple as the brush. it is of the same basic design as the Monster dolls, but it snaps together more sturdily than the current Monster stands in production do. I hope they don't decline in quality as well.
the base incorporates all the EAH logos and crests. I like that the stand is noticeably different in design from the Monster stands. it helps the brand stand (ha!) on its own a little bit.
The Bottom Line:
The Good: cute character and doll, with cute detailed accessories
The Bad: some small parts
The Verdict: if you aren't opposed to starting a new collection with Ever After High, I think Madeline Hatter is a great doll. she's colorful and will stand out on a shelf of Monsters or any other dolls.
