as part of the 13 Wishes doll line, Freshwater Lagoona Blue really stands out. originally I didn't much care for her, but as soon as I saw her in the store I was in love.
she comes in the new 13 Wishes packaging, which is similar to the Scaris box shape. the back of the box features a cartoon of Lagoona's new look, along with cartoons of the other three dolls in the basic 13 Wishes line.
removed from the outer box you can see that the liner itself is fairly decorative. you can also see what all is included with Lagoona. she has her pet pirahna Neptuna, who has also been given a makeover, a diary, and a black brush and stand. I miss the days that stands came in different colors to match the dolls, but I understand this is a cost cutting measure. Mattel- maybe make the pole and waist clip clear, and the base a little sturdier? just a suggestion.
so here's Lagoona, freed from her box. she has a darker blue skin and bright Crayola yellow hair. I'll do some comparison shots later so you can see how her skin color relates to her saltwater color.
her dress is a simple one piece affair. the main body is a magenta color with black chevrons. just under the bust there is a half skirt of blue sparkly tulle. there is also 1 sleeve (ocd does not like!) in tulle with black ruffles. all the raw edges of her dress are cut with a scalloped edge.
to accessorize, Lagoona has some cute jewelry (parental warning: small parts!). her earrings are translucent pink plastic molded to look like dragonflies. she has a bracelet and necklace in translucent green plastic that have seaturtle "charms" on them. I don't get the seaturtles, since they are obviously not freshwater animals, but they sure are cute.
Lagoona also has her signature pink flower barrette. I'm not sure what kind of flower it is supposed to be, but it is different from her saltwater one.
she also has this weird water mask thing that comes on the top of her head. it fits over her eyes, and has a little nose block piece like snorkeling goggles do. not a fan of this item with this fashion, but I will probably steal it for my Mad Science Lagoona, so she can do chemistry with Cleo and Ghoulia.
Lagoona's shoes have a fair amount of detail. they are translucent blue plastic with molded in grasses and reeds that remind me of the pond I used to walk by on my way to elementary school. unfortunately there seem to be some quality control issues with the paint job on these shoes, so they are going on my to-paint list.
in place of a purse, Lagoona again has a fishbowl for Neptuna to ride around in. both the fishbowl and Neptuna appear to use the exact same molds as the saltwater ones, just with different paintjobs. this time Neptuna is more of a muted purple color than the bright pink she was before.
The Bottom Line:
The Good: awesome, unique new Lagoona Blue doll
The Bad: some small parts
The Verdict: even if you are a collector who only wants one of each character, I think that Freshwater Lagoona Blue is different enough from all other Lagoonas to warrant an exception. I highly recommend picking her up!
