Howleen's stuff, painted

Howleen from the Wolf sisters 2 pack came with some cute stuff, that needed a little help in the paint department. first her shoes...

it bothered me that the buckle and chains on her shoes were painted (badly) in yellow. so I repainted them in gold. I think they look much better now.

I was also bothered by the sloppy paint job on the paw print on her backpack.

I tried to paint over the overspray with blue that matched the background color of the backpack. I also put a couple of layers of yellow on the paw print to try to even it out. it looks a little better, but I'm still annoyed by that drip. maybe I'll throw some more yellow on there later.

and just for fun I painted the buckles on the backpack straps blue to add a bit more interest to them.

Robecca's stuff made-over

Robecca's deluxe fashion set comes with a lot of nicely skulpted accessories, with someone disappointing paint jobs. here are her purse and shoes with the factory paint.

for the shoes, I painted the screws and studs on the shoe part bronze to match the soles, and the studs on the soles black for contrast.

for the purse, I painted the large screws silver and added yellow to the dials and readouts. there are still so many more details on this piece, but I'm now sure how to paint them. any suggestions?

Robecca deluxe fashion: review

another of the fashion packs I was very excited about is the Robecca Deluxe Fashion Pack.

click for more

The Bottom Line:

The Good: new fashions, new shoes with mix/match potential

The Bad: earring is a small part, only 1 pair of shoes for both fashions

The Verdict: I like Robecca so the Robecca Deluxe Fashion Pack caught my eye. if you enjoy redressing your dolls, you will probably like this set. if not, you can probably skip this one. I don't think the bubble packs display very well.

Scaris suitcase repaints

the Scaris suitcases are a good example of a lack of paint causing the highly detailed sculpts to look boring.

for example: Skelita's suitcase. there is only a little bit of grey paint on the skull on the front.

I used a little black paint to emphasize the quilting, and white paint to bring out all the raised details...

now you can see all the roses and swirls that someone spent a lot of time on. (side note: when I tried to paint the lacy bits it got a little messy. I'll have to go back and clean it up later.)

Jinafire's suitcase suffers from a similar lack of paint. there is only a little bit of goldish paint on the flames at the top of the front of the suitcase.

add some black and gold paint...

now you can see the dragon, scales, and fans, as well as the stud detailing all around the edges. her suitcase has a crazy amount of detail that gets totally lost without any paint.

I repainted these using some cheap acrylic paints I bought at walmart. I do suggest you invest in a nice detail brush though, as it makes it a lot easier to get rid of those brush strokes.

wherein collecting makes me feel ill again

I've already talked about how stressful collecting has become, and how that is causing me to lose enthusiasm for the hobby. I pretty much took the month of april off from collecting. I did buy a few things, but most of them have remained boxed. and I haven't done anything with my already deboxed dolls either.

my search for the perfect catrine has continued. my walmart has actually been stocking her which is a shock. I saw Cupid once and never again, and I was expecting the same here. so every time I go I take a quick glance to see if any of them strike me. I did end up swapping out my wonky-eyed one with a new one, but I still have 2 catrines that I can't decide between. every time I think I've made my decision, I pick the other one up to take downstairs, and then decide I like her better.

on top of that its sdcc reveal week apparently, but mattel is going to save monster high for last, I'm sure of it. after last year's epic fail at distributing the Scarah/Hoodude pack, I was kind of hoping they'd have a better plan ready for this year. too early to tell what will happen at the actual con, but apparently matty collector has changed their policy for what I believe to be worse. any additional stock left after the con will be sold on their site as before, but now they are giving subscribers (to any of their clubs) the ability to buy con items before the general public. which means there will be none left for the general public. which means more enraged fans.

well i started this post 2 days ago and still haven't finished it. i'm going to go ahead and post in the interest of having something new up. hopefully i'll snap out of this funk soon.
