the doll I was most excited about from the Scaris line is Jinafire Long. I was super excited to be able to find her in my local walmart. that never happens!
she comes in the Scaris packaging, with cartoons of the 5 "deluxe" dolls in this line on the back. below that is a profile picture and bio for Jinafire.
unfortunately her head is tacked to the liner with those dreaded T-ties, so I guess the thread Skelita came with was just a fluke. :-( while I'm talking about her head, I'll go ahead and mention that her hair is a huge disappointment.
it is green with yellow and black streaks. unfortunately, the topknot on mine was styled rather sloppily, so this might be something to watch out for. her hair is held in with glue which has seeped out a little bit and makes it really stringy near her head. finally, you can see a big bald spot that has been made more obvious by the sloppy styling and stringy glued hair.
the dress Jinafire wears is slightly OCD/anxiety inducing. for some reason Mattel seems to be big into asymmetric designs lately. the main body of her dress is a purple brocade that is one sleeved and half collared. the fabric has blue outlines of clouds and red flames on it. the other arm has a longer sleeve made out of see-through purple-with-red-scales fabric that has a scalloped edge.
Jinafire accessorizes with a gold belt. hanging from the middle of it is a pendant with the Monster High skullette imprinted on it. attached to the belt via a few loops of thread is another piece of the see-through purple-with-red-scales print fabric. I'm not sure how it is supposed to look, but it reminds me of a long chef's apron.
unfortunately, as you can see in the picture above, Mattel decided to tack this flimsy bit of fabric down through a loop in the belt with a giant T-tie. I am dreading removing it and seeing how much damage was done to the fashion due to this decision. why not use a few more loops of thread instead???
Jinafire also wears a red spiral bracelet and red frog (Chinese knot) earrings. she also has what I am guessing is a Qing dynasty inspired headdress. you can also see her beautiful gold scaly skin that set off her green reptilian eyes.
for the picture below I removed the red plastic tassells from her headdress so that you could get a better look at her earrings and one of her monster features- her ears.
her shoes are red plastic with painted cold soles. the ankle straps have the same frog detailing has her earrings. the actual heel of the shoe is shaped like a twisting horn, and I have no idea how Jinafire would be able to balance in those.
Jinafire's most prominent monster feature is her tail. it is gold and scaly like the rest of her skin. the base of the tail is a little thicker than the werecat tails and the end tapers down to some green (feathers?).
unlike any girl I've ever known, Jinafire is only bringing one modestly-sized suitcase with her to Europe. it is red with a black handle that is inspired by Chinese architecture. the lid of the suitcase has a dragon molded into it surrounded by swirling flames and Chinese fans. the top has molded flames that have been painted gold. the back has more molded swirls, and two sets of rolling wheels.
on the inside there are the same quilting and molded pocket details as in Skelita's. Jinafire's handle is not as adjustable as Skelita's, but due to the rectangular shape the suitcase stands well on it's own.
The Bottom Line:
The Good: new unique character with neat accessories and cultural touches
The Bad: some small parts (jewelry)
The Verdict: Scaris Jinafire Long is a beautiful doll, and I think you'll love her. with her golden scales and brightly colored accessories, she'll be a lovely addition to anyone's collection.
