as part of the new Scaris line, Mattel is introducing 2 new characters. Skelita Calaveras, daughter of Los Eskelitos, makes her debut as a contestant to be Madame Ghostier's new intern.
the back of the box features a cartoon of Skelita, along with her bio, across the bottom. above that are cartoons of all the "deluxe" dolls that come in this line along with a paragraph explaining why they are all visiting Scaris.
removed from the box we can see what all comes with Skelita. she has a pink rolling suitcase and a travel diary in addition to her brush and stand.
Skelita wears a black halter minidress with a swirl and flower print. the arm holes are trimmed with pink and purple ribbon. over her dress she wears a very colorful skirt that mimics the beautiful papel picado (cut paper) decorations frequently used as decorations in Mexican celebrations.
to accessorize, Skelita wears a very ornate orange necklace, a brown cuff bracelet, and a brown belt. the bracelet and belt both have tiny skulls and other things molded in.
Skelita has some wonderful shoes. they are platform sandals with green straps. the design across the top of the foot kind of echoes the handle of her suitcase a little further down. I can see these being popular with redressers.
ok, so her face. she has lots of beautiful traditional designs painted around her eyes and the corners of her mouth. (that white spot on her nose is a paint rub from contact with her box in transit.) her eyes are beautifully painted, but something about them seems a little off. too widely set maybe?
her hair is predominately black with an orange streak at each temple. if you are expecting her hair to look like the picture on the box, you will be disappointed. the curls are going to require a bit of styling, and her partial ponytail is not as voluminous.
to hold all her clothes while she travels, Skelita has a suitcase. the front of the case has swirls and flowers molded into the bright pink plastic, along with a stylized skullette in the middle. the handle is molded to look like bones.
the back view reveals the tiny wheels (this combined with the curved front makes it hard for the suitcase to stand upright on its own). you can also see that the handle is adjustable/retractable.
the inside of the suitcase is sculpted to look like it is quilted and has pockets on the lid. the "pockets" do make it look more like a real suitcase, even though they are nonfunctional.
The Bottom Line:
The Good: new character with unique body. beautiful clothes and accessories
The Bad: new character with unique body. suitcase cannot stand alone
The Verdict: Skelita Calaveras is beautiful and colorful and will stand out on your shelf of Monster High dolls. for me she was a must-have, and I think that you'll probably love her too.
