I am really finding the Create-a-Monster sets to be interesting. for my second set I picked up the Werecat and Witch starter set.
the witch doll is what first attracted me to this set. her green skin and beautiful face paint got my attention. while I'm talking about her head I'll go ahead and point out that she has pointy ears like all of our beloved vampire dolls.
another thing that is so far unique to this ghoul is her right hand mold. her thumb and forefinger are touching in the "OK" sign. at first I thought this would be limiting, but I really think it will be a very useful feature for posing her holding objects.
the other doll included in this set is a bright pink werecat. she has black stripes painted on her forearms and calves, and a tail that can be detached. she has painted on whiskers and a cat nose. my ghoul's mouth is painted a little off center but I like that- it gives her a mischievous look. it is speculated that she is a backgrounder.
I ended up switching their outfits, so that they "matched" the dolls a little better. the witch ended up snatching the black dress. the neck and hemlines are bordered with a scallop cut black and yellow striped material. she has an accompanying belt that can be removed. the molded on "buckle" is green and shaped like the monster high skullette.
that left the werecat with the black top and skirt ensemble. the skirt is made of a kind of cheap satin with blue animal print stripes. the top actually has a turtleneck and short sleeves. there is a decal on the front. for the longest time I thought this was some kind of snail and that didn't really make sense to me. today I finally realized it's a dead bird. a little morbid in my opinion.
as shown above, the werecat also has a so far unique hand mold. her thumb, index, and pinky fingers are extended with the other two tucked in, in the "I love you" sign. below is a photo of how her tail connects. no photo of the ears because they are ridiculous barrettes that I couldn't get to stay on.
as with the previous set, this set only comes with 1 wig. it is a short purple cut with blue streaks and bangs. like the previous wig, this one does not really fit very well. the werecat has been wearing it for all of her photos.
there is also still only 1 pair of shoes. they are black high-heeled sandals with cats that wind around the ankles. I think these are really cute and will be useable with a variety of outfits.
the final accessory, and the one I find the most confusing, is a tiny hat. the hatband was sculpted to look like a broom fixed in place with a skull. there is a thin elastic band to help hold it on. I have tucked it up inside the hat, but you can see it poking out under the brim. it's a cute accessory, I'm just not really sure what to do with it.
The Bottom Line:
The Good: unique looking dolls with all new accessories and hand molds
The Bad: only 1 wig and 1 pair of shoes, ear barrettes will not stay on
The Verdict: if you like the Werecat and Witch starter set, buy it, if you don't, don't. in my opinion there are enough new and unique items to make it worthwhile, but if you only want characters that are definitely shown in the webisodes or are trying to keep your monster population low, this one may be skippable.
