I'm not really sure how I should go about reviewing the Create-a-Monster sets, but I'll give it a go. when the CAM sets first came out there was quite an uproar about Mattel only including 1 torso, but enough other pieces to build 2 monsters. let me point out that this has been rectified, and now both ghouls in the Vampire-Sea Monster Starter Set have a color matching torso included.
when I first saw the promo pictures of the CAMs I fell in love wth the seamonster. she is a beautiful blue-violet color and has some ocean animal features- her forearms have squid/octopus tentacles, and her calves have fins. she also has little fin molded ears similar to Lagoona's.
here she is wearing one of the 2 included fashions. it consists of a haltertop and a skirt. the top is black with purple corset detailing and has a gold colored bat??? charm sewn to the front of it. the skirt makes me think of a mermaid tail. it is black with sparkly stripes and a purple ruffle at the bottom.
the second doll in this set doesn't really thrill me, but it is speculated she is a backgrounder from the webisodes featuring students from Belfry Prep due to the included wig and barrette that I'll talk about below. she is light pink with fangs, so you know she's supposed to be a vampire.
you probably noticed that both of these gals are wearing the same fashion. that's because the second fashion is pretty terrible. it consists of a one shouldered tanktop with a tie at the waist. the fabric is black with yellow bubbles and blue and purple splats. the miniskirt is turquoise with a black waistband and tiny belt loops. there is a purple swirl and yellow and orange tentacle pattern on it.
this set only includes 1 pair of shoes. they are black open-toed high heels. there is a purple stripe on the ruffle/cuff detailing at the top.
thre is also only 1 wig included in this set. it is black with purple streaks. it has bangs and a small partial ponytail on the crown. the wig attaches to the doll with a peg that lines up with the hole in the back of her head. the wig doesn't really seem to fit very well and it can be difficult to keep the wig cap from peeking out.
finally, the set does include 1 brush, and 1 stand, both of which are black. these are made out of a cheaper feeling black plastic than the stands that come with the basic dolls.
The Bottom Line:
The Good: customizable characters with unique, never before seen parts
The Bad: only 1 wig and pair of shoes
The Verdict: for the price (approximately the same as a basic doll) the Vampire-Sea Monster Starter Set is a good deal, especially considering the uniqueness of the seamonster character. also having the ability to make your own custom Monster High characters is a really fun idea.
