as part of the Sweet 1600 line of dolls that celebrates Draculaura's birthday (which is on Valentine's day), walmart has an exclusive doll- C.A. Cupid, daughter of Eros. [edit 6/22: I've heard that there will be a re-release of Cupid as a basic doll with a diary. not sure if it will also be an exclusive or if it will be more widely available. will update as I find more information.] she comes in the Sweet 1600 packaging that features a heart cutout window.
the back of the box has an introductory blurb about her, explaining how she is the daughter of "The Cupid" and does a radio show from the catacombs of Monster High answering monsters' questions about their love lives. there is a cartoon showing Cupid doing her radio show. beneath her are cartoons of the other 4 dolls in the line.
inside the box we have the Cupid doll, a pink stand for her, and a collector's card (you can see it peeking out from behind the Sweet 1600 popout). she does not come with a brush, which is just as well because her hair is pretty well shellacked in place.
Cupid's dress is all one piece. the top is made out of a sparkly light pink material, with gauzy off-the-shoulder black straps. there are clear plastic straps attached to ward off any toybox wardrobe malfunctions. the skirt is white fading to pink at the hem with lacy hearts on it. if you look closely you can see Cupid's bow-and-arrow motif in the hearts. around the waist is more of the black gauze and a black dripping effect that seems to be the signature of the Sweet 1600 line.
Cupid accessorizes with some pretty intricate shoes. one heel is a bow and the other is an arrow. there are pink and white hearts across the toes and up the side to the ankle strap. from her calves down (shown below) and her forearms down the white fades in to black. on the front sides only is there a lace pattern stencilled on in white.
an additional accessory is Cupid's bone wings. they attach at her neck with an arrow-shaped U. as you can see above, the wings very closely resemble a ribcage and vertebrae. they are very well sculpted and have a bronze-y paint wash to bring out the details.
Cupid is another one of those gals that comes with the mismatched earrings that drive my OCD nuts. her left ear sports an arrow, and her right ear has a bow. my OCD was happy to notice that the earrings match up with her shoes on each side.
in the above pictures you can also see Cupid's hair a little better. it is a very bright pink in a flip style. running across her head from one ear to the other, kind of like a headband, is a small section of hair that has been twisted and formed into a small heart "halo" above her head. you can also see that the "shine spots" in her eyes are small hearts. oh Mattel, I love the details!
the rest of her jewelry consists of a pink thatched bracer and a ring. the ring is a tiny bow with heart-tipped arrow that she wears on the middle finger of her right hand. (Parental Warning: all of her jewelry are small pieces)
Cupid's purse is shaped like a heart and has the same lace stencilled on one side as is on her dress. the bottom has more of the black dripping that kind of looks like fringe. on closer inspection, the purse has seams molded in, and the black appears to be oozing out the bottom of the purse. (I'll have to see if I can get a picture that shows that.) the handles are curved heart-tipped arrows and the top does have an opening.
finally we have what I am calling her collector's card. the obverse has Cupid in cartoon form, earphones on, sitting in front of the dripping Sweet 1600 heart. the reverse has her bio, so we are able to learn a little more about Cupid's personality.
The Bottom Line:
The Good: unique character with awesome details. another Greek mythology-based character
The Bad: some small parts
The Verdict: as of right now, this is the only version of Cupid (and she's an exclusive), so if you want one of every character you are going to want to grab one if you see it. she seems to be a purpose created character only for the TV special, and has not been featured in any of the webisodes that I can recall, so it seems unlikely that they will make another version of her any time soon.
