amid the hub and the bub, I was able to snag a Monster High Operetta Doll during one of the brief windows of time she was available at retail price on amazon. her monster parent is the Phantom of the Opera.
Operetta comes in the now familiar coffin-style packaging. for her avatar she has an opera mask with her heart-shaped musical note imposed over it. the back of her box has her bio and cartoon, as well as images of Nefera and Toralei, and an ad for the Monster High video game.
inside the box we find the usual diary (addressed to her friend Finn), brush, and stand. and Operetta's pet, a spider named Memphis "Daddy O" Longlegs. I'll go ahead and talk about him now to get it over with. you'll notice he's still attached to the packaging... I left him there because apparently my arachnophobia applies to purple plastic spiders with Elvis hair. he is made of a pretty sturdy plastic, so unless your kids are really rough, I think he'll probably hold up to daily play.
Operetta's outfit is pretty normal compared to some of the ensembles we've gotten recently. she wears cuffed jeans capris, a purple and black houndstooth patterned shirt, and a cropped white tuxedo jacket. the jacket has spiderweb and piano key detailings, and a tiny skullette "button" over the snap closure.
she accessorizes with a belt that has music notation and spiderweb detailings, as well as treble clef and musical note "chains" hanging on one side. her shoes are kind of like saddle shoes, and have more spiderweb detailing, and a spider with red treble clef as a shoelace topper. the heel of the shoe is also a treble clef. on her right hand she wears a piano key bracelet and a tiny (Parental Warning: small parts!) ring that looks like a die/dice. it even has little pips molded into the different faces. she also has mismatched dice earrings, which drive my OCD batty.
now I'm going to take a little time-out to talk about Operetta herself. first of all, she's purple, a new color for the Monster High-schoolers. her hair is a bright red with black stripes. it's supposed to be styled into victory rolls, but really it's just a mess. I'm trying to figure out how to restyle them and I'll let you all know when I've found a solution.
underneath her heart-shaped musical note eye-mask, Operetta has some molded in "scarring" in the shape of music bars and treble clefs. this pattern continues down her neck to her arm, where the pattern becomes "tattooed". also, that tiny black dot to one side under her lip is intentional, it is her "beauty-mark" that she speaks of in her bio.
finally, she comes with a purse that is shaped like a guitar.
the front of the guitar purse is red with a black neck and white spiderweb detailing. there are two treble clef cutouts similar to the cutouts on a violin. the purse opens up, and is fairly roomy on the inside. Operetta would be able to carry around a fair amount of school supplies in there. the back of the purse is black with a raised "MH" logo. the shoulder strap is made of a slightly flexible plastic, and has a skull "buckle."
The Bottom Line:
The Good: very unique character and doll. cute clothes that will be easily mixed/matched with other clothing items.
The Bad: her hair! some small parts.
The Verdict: The Monster High Operetta Doll would make a nice addition to your Monster High collection. she's sure to stand out, with her bright red hair, and is well liked by music fans and Phantom of the Opera fans. though hard to find right now, keep checking, she'll be available at retail again soon. do not support doll scalpers!
