One set I have been really excited about this year is the Monster High Draculaura And Clawd Wolf Giftset This is the first issue of Clawd and is his "basic" doll, although he is part of wave 2 along with this Draculaura. Technically these two come in the coffin style packaging, but it was much easier to open than SDCC Ghoulia's was.
On the back of the box there is a drawing of Draculaura, gazing adoringly at Clawd, along with a page from her notebook that has a poem she wrote about him. Next to her, looking quite tough, are Clawd and Rockseena, along with Clawd's bio. Across the bottom portion of the box you can see little pictures of the other dolls that will constitute wave 2.
Their diaries pick up more or less where the diaries in the previous wave left off - the beginning of the school year. In Clawd's diary we finally find out what happened between him and Cleo DeNile.
Here they are out of the box. I put Clawd's hat on, which was attached to the box separately. Right now I want to talk about Draculaura.
At first glance, Draculaura's outfit is a hot mess. There are colors and patterns and textures and it's all very overwhelming until you start breaking it down into individual components.
So, from the bottom up... First her shoes, which actually are really adorable. They are pink, yellow, and black to match her dress. The heal is made up of stacked "buttons" which I think is a cute idea.
Her, once again aptly-named, tights are yellow with pink polka-dots. These do not have any stretch in them, so they need to be pulled on carefully.
Ok, so, the dress... it has a two-tiered magenta skirt with some black netting as an under skirt. The fullness of the back of this dress reminds me of a bustle, which I guess is in keeping with her Victorian Era vibe. The front panel of the dress, from the bust down, is in a matte black fabric with pink and yellow lines that make it look like plaid. There are 8 tiny plastic "buttons" that are sewn between the front panel and the pink side panels. The front above the bust is white with tiny pink hearts. Her white sleeves have pink cuffs and poofy shoulders. She has a white lace collar with a pink bow in the front.
She carries a black coffin-shaped purse, with a pink heart with fangs on it. She also has an open umbrella to shade her from the sun. The umbrella has a heart with bat wings on the handle and a pink bow at the top. The "fabric" of the umbrella is pink and feminine on the top half and like a spider web on the bottom half.
Her earrings (Small Parts Alert!) have the same heart with bat wings as her umbrella handle. They are hanging from yellow buttons that match the decoration on her shoes. That semi-circular line you see on her face is a piece of plastic that goes behind her head and to both ears. The earrings are holding it in place. I do not know what purpose this plastic serves, as it is not connected to anything else and does not support her hair or clothes in any way.
Ok, so back to Clawd. Remember him? He is Clawdeen's older brother, so he is also a werewolf, and also attends Monster High. He is active in sports, claiming football as his favorite, but as far as I can remember he's only played "casket"ball in the webisodes. And now he is dating Draculaura.
He defines his style as "casual a la Clawdeen". He's wearing jeans, with a patterned button-up shirt, and a gold vest. The pattern on his shirt appears to be X's but on closer inspection they are actually tiny crossed bones (like a dog chews bones, get it?). And his turquoise kerchief is in a hounds-tooth pattern. Oh Mattel, I love you. Another cute detail is that he has claws instead of hands.
He tucks his jeans into some gold boots. He wears a turquoise "belt" with a gold crescent moon "buckle" and a gold watch. He has a single gold earring in his left ear (Small Parts Alert!) and tops the whole ensemble off with a turquoise hat. If you're wondering why he has so many gold accessories... werewolves can only be killed by Silver bullets.
In the picture above you can see the patterns on his shirt and kerchief a little better. I put his hat back on for his picture with Rockseena, which also showcases his patterns fairly well.
So, Rockseena... I guess I should admit I have a love-hate relationship with some of the Monster Highschooler's pets. While well sculpted, Rockseena does not fall into the love category.
Rockseena is a gargoyle bulldog. She's got the wings and stoney appearance of a gargoyle, and creepy red eyes. Her face really does evoke that of a snarly bulldog. And you can see the bottoms of her paws actually have little toe pads and everything.
The Bottom Line:
The Good: cute set with an all-new character, and a guy at that! lots of cute details.
The Bad: some small pieces
The Verdict: currently this is the only issue of Clawd Wolf, so if you are collecting all the "basic" dolls and their diaries you will have to get this set for him. The Monster High Draculaura And Clawd Wolf Giftset is a good addition to your Monster High collection.
