If you've been anywhere near a doll aisle in the past few months, you've probably seen the Monster High Cleo De Nile and Deuce Gorgon Giftset. This set has been a slow mover, despite being a good deal at twice the dolls and accessories, for less than twice the price. I think the problem here is that they bundled a male character with the bossy diva character, making it lower on the must-have list for most people.
I apologize in advance for the photos in this review. My camera battery was getting low, so I was in a hurry and didn't get many good shots.
The back of the trapper-keeper style box shows Cleo and Deuce in the middle, with their bios on either side. Cleo is the daughter of the mummy and Deuce is the son of Medusa. While not a classic monster, I would definitely say that Medusa is monstery enough to be included in this line!
Inside the box you get quite a bit: a Cleo doll and her stand and hairbrush, a Deuce doll and his stand, two pets, and two diaries. For me, Deuce's diary is the more enjoyable read of the two.
Cleo's outfit consists of a bodysuit that is designed to look like mummy wrappings. There are even a few dangly pieces that make it look like she is unraveling, which is a nice touch. Over her bodysuit she has a flowy blue top which has some glitter on it. Unfortunately this top is split up the back with both a velcro and a tie closure. Her shoes are platform sandals that are also styled to look like bandages. She also has a removable plastic gold belt.
Deuce's outfit makes me think of skaters and hipsters at the same time. It consists of a grey stripped vest over a red sleeveless graphic T-shirt. His belt has a cassette tape buckle that matches the cassette tape screened on his shirt. His pants are black with diamonds printed on them that echo the scales of snakes. His shoes are white with black checks.
He accessorizes with a black fingerless "glove" and a black bracelet. He has a chain-link necklace and matching tiny hoop in the cartilage of his left ear. And of course he wears a pair of sunglasses to keep from turning his friends to stone. Parental warning: these are all small pieces.
Deuce also sports some snake features beyond the mohawk. He has some green scales painted on his left arm, and his eyes are slitted. In some of the cartoon drawings of him he is shown having a split tongue, but this is not shown on the doll.
Being an Egyptian princess, of course all of Cleo's accessories are gold. She has a gold purse and a gold thigh holster for her gold phone.
She also has a boat-load of jewelry. She's got pyramid shaped earrings, a bracelet, an arm band, and a headband all in gold. Parental warning: these are all small pieces. She also has some strands of gold rooted into her hair.
Even Cleo's pet snake, Hissette, has jewelry. Hers is not removable though, but painted onto her mint green skin. Hissette is made of a fairly sturdy plastic, so I don't foresee breaking being an issue.
With Deuce's pet Mattel got creative again. His two-tailed rat is named Perseus "after some guy [his] mom knew in ancient Greece." Love it! I don't think Perseus is very cute though, even for a rat. In addition to his two tails, he has an orange mohawk, and an earring. He is made of a slightly softer plastic, so amputations may become an issue with very rough play.
The Bottom Line:
The Good: two dolls, Deuce is one of the more creative characters.
The Bad: some small parts
The Verdict: Monster High Cleo De Nile and Deuce Gorgon Giftset is a good deal price-wise. It's been a slow mover, so you are probably safe waiting to get this one. Some places are starting to put this giftset on sale, so a good deal is getting better.
